Palisade vs ClearVu: what the rating actually means

Most clients arrive asking for 'a 2.4 metre fence' without knowing that the security rating — not the height — determines whether a boundary will hold against a determined intrusion attempt.

SANS 1841 grades fencing on a scale from SR1 (deterrence only) to SR3 (sustained attack resistance). Standard mild-steel palisade sits at SR1–SR2. ClearVu welded mesh panels with anti-climb profiles reach SR2–SR3 and are the only system accepted for residential security estates requiring PSIRA-compliant perimeters.

  • Palisade: SR1–SR2, visible deterrent, lower cost per metre
  • ClearVu: SR2–SR3, anti-cut mesh, PSIRA estate compliance
  • Both systems available in 1.8 m, 2.1 m, and 2.4 m heights
  • Coating: hot-dip galvanised + powder-coat standard on all installs

Concrete vs core-drilled: footings for Cape shale

The Cape Peninsula sits on Table Mountain Sandstone Group geology — a mix of hard quartzite, fractured shale, and coastal sand that makes a single footing specification impossible. Getting this wrong means posts that lean after the first southeaster.

In Constantia and the Southern Suburbs, we hit shale at 300–400 mm and core-drill 150 mm diameter sockets, setting posts in non-shrink grout. On the Atlantic Seaboard and Cape Flats, we pour 450 mm concrete collars in sandy substrate. Each site gets a probe before we price.

  • Shale substrate: 150 mm core-drilled socket, non-shrink grout
  • Sandy substrate: 450 mm × 450 mm concrete collar, 900 mm depth
  • Every site probed before pricing — no assumptions
  • Method statement supplied with every quote
